In the 21st century, the average life expectancy is increasing. What problems will this cause for individuals and society?
Suggest some solutions that could be taken to reduce the effect of aging populations.
We are living longer than ever before these days, so society as well as individuals are confronted with a range of new challenges. Although we face to solve those
difficulties in an effective manner, we have the opportunity to make a far more smooth transition into the future.
The most obvious problems with the average life span getting longer are the shortfall in tax revenues as well as the health of the elderly, Aged people are less
likely to avoid suffering from diseases. Most countries do not have enough hospital facilities such as hospitals, doctors and other medical personnel to meet the demands of the elderly patients. In addition, as the number of economically active people decreases, the government is expecting a setback in securing tax revenue. In Korea, most workers are forced to be retired before they are 60 or earlier. Therefore it would be a big burden to the country imposing less tax compared to spending more welface budget.
However, the good news is that these concerns mentioned above can be tackled if there is a desire to take them on. Encouraging the elderly both doing regular excerise and eating a well-balanced diet would be fundamental followed by improving the medical sector. This is because preventing is always better than cure. We could also re-assess our pension and retirement systems to reflect an aging society to prevent in the shortage of national taxes. By recognizing the rights and dignity of older people and inducing the retirement age extension policy, they could be economically active for longer and consume more goods and services. This would boost the nation as a whole while reducing the potential for poverty among the aged.
In conclusion, it is clear that there are various problems associate with a longer average life expentancy, and we need to both take steps as well as the elderly themselves to tackle this phenomenon.
