최초의 소행성 탐사선 하야부사를 발사함


소행성의 중력이 굉장히 작으나 무시할 수 없는 수준이고
다른 천체와 달리 구체가 아니라서 중력이 일정하지 않음

따라서 소행성 탐사에 매우 정밀한 제어가 필수적인데
정밀함을 요구하는 일에서 일본이 타의 추종을 불허함


2003년 5월 9일 출발한 하야부사가 끊임없이 실패할 위기에 직면했으나
이를 극복하고 2010년, 7년 만에 귀환에 성공하여 큰 감동을 안겨주었음

하야부사가 여러 진기록을 쓰며 기네스북에 오르고
업적을 기념하여 명왕성에 하야부사의 이름을 붙임


이후 취약점을 보완하고 전반적으로 향상된 하야부사 2를 2014년 발사하여
2020년 시료를 담은 캡슐을 회수하고, 본체는 지금도 활동을 이어가고 있음

소행성 탐사선으로 미국의 오시리스 렉스도 있으나, 2016년 발사되어 하야부사보다 한참 늦었음
게다가 시료를 담은 캡슐이 2023년 말 귀환할 예정이므로, 아직 소행성 탐사 임무를 마치지 못함


한편 하야부사가 오랫동안 우주를 횡단하는 비결이 이온 엔진으로
일본이 이를 다른 분야에도 활용하여 초저고도 인공위성을 개발함

초저고도가 관측에 유리하나 공기 저항이 높아서 인공위성의 속도가 줄어드는데
이온 엔진을 쓰는 일본 인공위성은 추락하지 않고 안정적으로 궤도를 돌 수 있음


제2차 세계대전 당시 최강의 전투기 제로센이 연합국 파일럿에게 두려움의 대상이던 것처럼
일본이 최고인 부분이 적지 않은데, 한국 사회가 미국과 유럽을 인정하면서 일본을 깎아내림

막상 미국과 유럽에서도 일본과의 협력이 절실하게 필요한데
한국 사회가 일본을 낮게 평가하는 근거를 도무지 알 수 없음
